A friend, who grew up in Culpeper in segregation, mentioned to me that he wished people knew the real history of the Black Commercial area in the 200 block of E. Davis Street and the surrounds. He sadly noted, "All they really know of are the years after desegregation when many of the businesses buildingd fell into disuse. I thought we could fix that with permanent and public identification and stories. I reached out to the town tourism folks to ask about process and came away with a partner and significant funding. The RtR project was well on its way, but not without buy in from the African American Heritage Alliance. They were willing also to be a partner. That came with a wealth of local knowledge collected and held in the personal library of Angie Chapman. The tourism folks also, thinking it might boost visitation, added a page to their website where one can find deeper stories via the QR codes on the plaques or directly visiting the website.
